Regional markets rise on upbeat US data. But oil price slump sends some major Singapore plays lower.

Buybacks
SGX announced that for the first week of the month from 1 to 5 December, there were a total of 87,005,000 shares repurchased by 18 stocks with a total consideration of $87.6m. As revealed by SGX, the five stocks with the largest consideration amount in buybacks last week were Genting Singapore PLC, OCBC, SATS, Pacific Century Regional Developments and Sembcorp Industries. This followed on from S$137 million in November.

Bad News for stocks next week
The Dow tumbled more than 300 points on Friday (Dec 12) as US stocks took cues from a rout in European equities following another big drop in oil prices.

Investment Pondering:

The past few weeks have been characterized by declines in stock prices. Many were speculating whether this decline is the beginning of a new bear market, or whether it was a sign that the Singapore economy is heading into a recession. So, what is the right approach to investing? For myself, I choose to ignore that noise, and stick to my simple long-term investing. It is during turbulent times, that I realize how much easier it is to keep a simple investment strategy that produces steady and growing cash flow that goes directly to my bottom line.

Change in mood sends STI back into the black. It rose 0.43% on higher opening of Europe markets, better news from US.

This month October 2014, the STI index is in red. Of course, this is music to a long-term investors ear, because many stocks within the index are down to varying degrees as well. So, many buy and hold investor will be eagerly humming to the music all along, giddily buying stocks in a more rapid manner than usual. Up or down market, buying shares in high quality businesses that reward loyal shareholders with regular and reliable increasing dividends is and always will be also my mode of investing style.

Buy SIA Engineering @ 4.57 and it close at 4.52 for the week. If are one of those who feel that after you buy, the stock price start to drop. Don't worry, I am also like you.

Investment Pondering:

Investing for income is never easy and in order to have a decent chance for financial freedom in the days to come, you're going to need to put your savings into something that will yield a return and increase in value over the years, instead of dwindling. So your first step should be to learn the very basics of the stock market and how it works.

STI breaks 4 day losing streak to rise 24.5 points. Bargain hunters and hopes of better US jobs data pull up S'pore market.

When Mr Market become weak, its time for buy and hold investor to pick up good quality stocks.

This week, buy in the open market Eu Yan Sang @ 0.79. One of their product Bo Ying Compound used for phlegm, vomiting, crying at night, fever, cold and cough in young children was featured in an FDA alert last week which warned consumers of its lead poisoning risk. This bad news have resulted their share price going down to a low of 0.76 before ending the week to close at 0.79. Believe this is just as temporary hiccup for them as Eu Yan Sang is still one of the largest TCM groups around South East Asia with more than 300 products under their Eu Yan Sang brand name.
