Straits Times Index Stock Price April - June 2013

One Year High and Low

High 3,313.03 (March 27 2013)

Low 2,698.90 (June 4 2012)

Date                       STI                             Volume           STI ETF         Nikko STI ETF

June 28 2013    3,150.44 +32.41 333 million shares traded         3.21                    3.21
STI scores fourth straight day of gains.  Easing of fears over stimulus policies and window dressing boost market.

Bought Hupsteel @ 0.225 which dividend is 10 SGD per 1000 shares (4.44 % based on 2012 payout).

Mr. Market is so irrational.  When everyone expect it to go further down, it rebounded so soon.  No wonder there was a saying, ' Buy on Fear, Sell on Hope'.  For dividend investor, develop a simple stocks purchase principles, keep to your focused, diversified your portfolio and let the magic of compounding does its work.

June 21 2013    3,124.45 -8.81    409 million shares traded         3.20                    3.17
STI slips slightly after wild ride.  Wall Street's dive sets tone early, but selldown slows with sharp rally.

Purchase UMS at 0.49 which dividend is 60 SGD per 1000 shares (12% @ 2012 payout).

June 14 2013    3,161.43 +30.74  259 million shares traded        3.22                    3.21
Regional markets stage rebound.  SIT rises 30.74 points, investors buoyed by positive US economic data.

Continued to make purchases this week as stock market dive:
GP Industries @ 0.51 which dividend is 30 SGD per 1000 shares (5.8 % based on 2012 payout)
SPH @ 4.22 which dividend is 240 SGD per 1000 shares (5.7% based on 2012 payout)

Remember, if you are a technical trader, you need to be unemotional and cut losses at 10% and buy only when the uptrend strengthen again.  If you are a buy and hold dividend long-term investor, then this is the best time to average down your fundamentally strong companies and earn better dividend payout.

June 7 2013      3,184.72 -8.79    276 million shares traded         3.22                    3.24
Jittery investors head for the exit.  Traders across region get cold feet before release of US job data.

As market dive, it's time to pick up good dividend stocks as the average investor is better off trading long-term.  This week, I bought:
Lum Chang @ 0.35 which dividend is 20 SGD per 1000 shares (5.7% based on 2012 payout)
SGX @ 7.19 which dividend is 270 SGD per 1000 shares (3.7% based on 2012 payout)

May 31 2013     3,311.37 -24.64  648 million shares traded         3.35                    3.37
Market ends week on dour note.  STI closes 0.74% down.  Analysts expect further volatility ahead.

As a dividend investor, I bought the following stocks as the market dive:
King Wan @ 0.34 which is 15 SGD (4% of dividend per 1000 shares based on 2012 payout).
CDW @ 0.144 which is 9 USD (8% [estimate as dividend is in USD] of dividend per 1000 shares based on 2012 payout).
Vicom @ 4.79 which is 182 SGD (4% of dividend per 1000 shares based on 2012 payout).

May 23 2013     3,393.17 -61.20  645 million shares traded         3.43                    3.44
Markets tumble amid US, China fears.  ST Index sinks 1.8%, its worst one-day plunge since May last year.

Finally, the big drop arrived.  So do you panic, sell out or sit and wait.  Well, that will depends whether you a short term trader, trend follower, fundamental or a buy and hold dividend investor.  Eventually, it is your emotion that will direct your decisions.  That is why the market is so unpredictable as everyone will make different decisions even with the same set of information.

May 17 2013     3,449.30 -2.98    337 million shares traded         3.46                    3.49
STI resilient amid weak US data.  Benchmark index closes just a notch below Thursday's five-year high.

As dividend investor, we are more concern about the future pay out and company fundamental. We prefer to follow guru like the stock investment strategy of Warren Buffett.  Whether the STI is hitting a 5 year high does little difference.  In fact, it is much better if the market can go lower as our cost of entry will be lower which will directly improve our dividend rate.

May 10 2013     3,443.77 +10.99  337 million shares traded        3.46                    3.49
STI edges up to another five-year  high.  It reflects trends at regional bourses, which shrugged off Wall Street drop.

For the week, bought Vicom @ 4.96.  Based on my purchase price and 2012 dividend payout, it's about 4% of dividend per 1000 shares.  That is around 182 SGD added to my dividend portfolio.

As a dividend investor, you need to asked yourself, is the company fundamental strong enough to purchase more shares if it falls by say 20% or more. If you are a car owner, if make business sense that you should owned Vicom since you are already using its service.  Vicom is the largest technical testing and vehicle inspection company in Singapore.  This week Vicom also announced that its Q1 profit was up 6.5% at $7.46m.

May 3 2013       3,369.90 -32.49   455 million shares traded        3.40                    3.41
STI slides on profit-taking.  Investors lock in recent gains to send index slipping nearly 1 per cent.

Added Cordlife @ 0.73 to my dividend portfolio.  Based on 2012 dividend payout, it's about 5% (38 SGD) at the price of 730 SGD per 1000 shares.  There are 3 major shares movement this week:
City Challenge Global Limited - Reduce shareholdings from 9.377% to 0%.
Coop International Pte Ltd - Increase sharesholdings from 8.796% to 10.517%.
Wells Spring Pte Ltd - Increase shareholdings from 7.226% to 10.839%.

Interesting read in The Business Times Weekend page 34 of Show Me The Money by Teh Hooi Ling.  Taking a long-term view pays.  An experiment done with Malaysian and Indonesian stocks. The experiment shows that investing for the long-term in Fundamental Good companies that pays dividend will be profitable for the Average Investor in the long-run due to the power of compounding.

April 26 2013     3,348.87 +11.16  295 million shares traded        3.35                    3.41
STI scores a hat-trick, setting new five-year high.  Rally likely powered by liquidity unleashed by global central banks.

Added Venture Corporation @ 8.37 from open market to my dividend portfolio.  At this price you get around 0.059 of dividend which is 500 SGD per 1000 shares based on the 2013 distribution of 0.50%.

Venture Corporation is a leading global provider of technology services, products and solutions with established capabilities spanning marketing research, design and development, product and process engineering, design for manufacturability, supply chain management, as well as product refurbishment and technical support across a range of high-mix, high-value and complex products.

Trading is difficult for many traders as they make profits from buying low and selling higher or buy higher and sell higher.  Many traders failed as it effect their emotion when their purchase stocks failed to move in their profit direction.  However, if you are the top 5% who happened to be unemotional and can make quick decision, then you should continue being a trader.  Remember that there is always a chance to lose everything in trading. For the majority, in the long run, it will be more profitable if you were to pay attention and find good companies to invest for their dividends.

April 19 2013     3,294.05 -2.32   367 million shares traded          3.32                    3.36
S'pore misses out on regional rebound.  ST Index slips, in contrast with gains for most of the other Asia-Pac indices.

Bought Sembcorp again @ 4.96 from Mr Market.  Sembcorp announced it will be building a waste-to-energy plant that cost $470m in Britain.

After many years of trading, I found that it does not suit me.  Maybe it suits you.  I am now a just a dividend focus investor and will stay fully invested as I learned to ignored the market noises.

April 12 2013     3,294.19 -14.61 204 million shares traded          3.33                    3.37
Korea jitters, weak S'pore data lead to profit taking.  Investor sentiment cools as volumes shrink and STI dips 0.2% for the week.

For the week, bought Sembcorp @ 5.08 from the open market.

Sembcorp is a trusted global water service provider and Singapore's largest water management company.   It is responsible for Singapore's first privately-developed independent power plant, which is also the country's largest cogeneration facility at 815 megawatts.   It owns, develops, markets and manages urban developments comprising industrial parks as well as business, commercial and residential space in Vietnam, China and Indonesia.

April 5 2013        3,299.78 -8.02  331 million shares traded          3.31                    3.37
STI slips ahead of US jobs report.  Investors cautious, but benchmark index still up 0.25% for the week.
This week HPH Trust had replace F & N in the STI index.

I have also bought Transpac @ 1.665 and OUE @ 3.03 from the open market.

OUE has achieved consistent growth over the past 40 years by developing and managing landmark properties at prime locations in Singapore and across the region.  The company is involved in retail, commercial and residential developments.

Transpac Industrial Hldgs Ltd is an investment company. The company aims to achieve substantial capital appreciation primarily through equity or equity-related investments in growing private companies located in Asia with emphasis on Singapore, China, Hong Kong, India, Indo-China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand.
