Managed and Treat Your Career Like You're Self-Employed

By © Arthur, The Part Time Job Home

Why bother to treat and managed your career like a self-employed person running your own business?

The reasons is because to many of us, our career is our primary and only source of income.  In comparison, the average employees spend most of their time on their job against other activities like leisure, family or even sleeping.

Why is it so?  That is because our job pay us a monthly income in returns for our labour hours.  With that monthly income, we can then feed our families and spend it on whatever we need or want.  In simple term, "We are Working for Money".

All these are links to an item called MONEY.  There is a famous quote from sales people: "No Money No Talk".  Sales people make their money from talking, so, if you don't have money, it is very unlikely that they would want to talk to you.  As money is tightly link to our job, it is not surprise that we are bond emotionally by our job.  Whether you realized it or not, our job has already form an important role in our life.  Society even link us with our job status.  Do you admired people who are lawyers, doctors or CEO of a company?  See the money link there.

Therefore, it is important that we perform well in our job so that we can get promoted and earn more money.  Many of us can't imagine ourselves being fired and without a job.  When we are out of job, we start to imagine things about our children having to beg on the street, all the thing that are out of reach due to the lack of a monthly salaried income.

So, in order to have more control of your life, learn to perform well by taking a business like approach to your career.  Why take a business like approach?  Take a look at people who are self-employed running a business.  They tends to follow a logical way of decision making together with an aggressive growth objective.  Business people think rationally and analyze each problem logically.  They think positively for every problem they encounter and provide alternative solutions for each of them.  They have a contingencies plan and they are well prepared for a change when things do not work out as they have planned.

What are some of the business management skill you can apply on your career?

- Marketing

People running a business are always on a lookout for new opportunities to make money.  They are never complacent and constantly seek to expand their business and grow.  Look at the advertising that are surrounding you daily.  They are advertising from large and well-known companies.  They continue to market their business even when they are already so big and well-established.

Apply that principle to your career.  It is your responsibility to get out and network yourself to other people.  Be a well-known figure in your industry.  Write articles in your spare time to magazine related to your career and continue to improve your skills till you are a well-known expert.

- Keep Improving

The business environment is constantly changing and businesses have to be constantly on their feet or faced the risk of being out of business.

Same thing happened in your career.  Your job is constantly at risk as companies move overseas to lower the cost of doing business.  Your job skill must be better and you must be able to add more value to your companies than others.  That alone will put in you in demand no matter how bad the job market is.

- Diversify your Income

Businesses always developed new products to diversify their income streams.  Demands changes and those businesses that couldn't cope with the consumer changes eventually have to end their business.

It is pure common sense that once you are settled down on your career, it is time for you to start planning for an additional source of income.  Invest in areas where you can earned a PASSIVE INCOME.  Consider investing in real estate if you have the money, writing and publishing books on your area of expertise or starting a part-time internet work from home job.  They might require significant time and effort from you in the beginning but in returns, they can provide you with a long term passive income for life, even when you are not working or out of job.

Managing your career like a business let you have more control of your life and destiny.  Be pro-active and let the money work for you or you have to spend your entire life working for it.

Wishing success and a brighter future ahead.
