Like many people you know, you're going to have to pull double duty while working at home.  You are likely to wind up working on your home based job while doing the house chores, and lets not forget about the other things, family and friends will ask you to do because they know you are at home. It is going to be difficult to separate work from family and social life while doing home based work.

Have a schedule and own up to it.

You will be tempted to do the things you normally do away from your "job". This will not bring you success. Answer work calls during your work hours and answer personal calls during off hours. Also remember to take your breaks though. It is true that family has to come first but you need to make sure that you resist all urges to get away from work.

Hours for the career at home.

Your friends may consider you working home based as an opportunity to chat and go for coffee or a round of golf or something. You will need to make them understand that home office hours are working hours. Leave the personal stuff for after hours. After a bit they will understand that you need to maintain your schedule to make money.

You will need to set up some hours that work for you.

If you are most productive from 6 at night to 2 am then that should be your working at home office hours. Thats the greatest part of having a home based online career. Whether your a night owl or an early bird, work when you are most productive. Some set up a split shift. Work in the morning then take the afternoon off. When things in the house settle down go back to work in the evening for awhile. What ever your schedule is make sure to stick to it.

Separate phone line

This will help you to separate personal calls and home based calls for your service or product. It will also help you separate the time for home based employment and the time for personal issues.

If you can have office space in your house.

If not try and put in a partition, this will help the kids know when you are in there you are at work and not to be interrupted. Dress like you would if you were leaving the house for work. Some people dress casual or some dress right up. This is a mind set. Gets your body and mind ready to know it is time to go to work. Answer the phone as a business. Spend the money you are going to need to do it right. cell or fax and even a small computer can help.
