Challenging Yourself Towards What You Desire

"The minute you settle for less than you deserve,
you get even less than you settled for."
*-- Maureen Dowd

"Wherever you see a successful business, someone
once made a courageous decision."
*-- Peter Drucker

"Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so?
Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live.
Before they know it, time runs out."
*-- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Every life journey starts with that single steps as they say and life itself are made up of lots of steps. Life at its best are a series of events where you are constantly challenging yourself. A big enough challenge will bring out strengths and abilities that you will never knew that it had exist. Taking on challenges that you are really passionate about and this will bring you to life and bring life to you.

Ben Stein says: "The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want."

This is not always easy and challenging yourself with all those possibilities that there are in our live. Great ideas are great, but until we get focused on one of them that's all they are. In the past I have spent a lot of time and energy chasing my own tail, with little or nothing to show for it. Which brings me to the second part, a quote by Harry E. Fosdick sums this up well -

"No stream or gas drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunnelled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined."

I spend a lot of time coming up with writing ideas and even start on quite a few of them, however it seems only about half of them get finished. The thing that I have noticed about the completed writings are, that I had a clear goal as to what I want to write about, the ones that don't get completed, I don't have a clear end in mind; I work on the theory of evolution to see what I create. Occasionally this works, but not usually unless a clear focus appears while I am writing.

As Steven Covey said, "A plane is off course 99% of the time on the way to its destination but manages to land there at the end of the journey". When I practice self-discipline, I have a feeling of control in my life. I feel more content and motivated, because I'm moving forward with a purpose towards my goals. I also move into the moment and the mind clutter clears. The old saying "In commitment there is freedom" seems to be very true.

Discipline for me is one of those words that I have attached in the back of my mind to school, authority and control. I thought that it was better to fight it, than comply with it, but now I am getting a new respect for the word discipline, as I like the freedom of mind and spirit that comes with it.

Another benefit is that I am a lot more motivated, when I become focused and disciplined on a targeted project I tend to complete the project; in fact I usually become excited about what I am doing. The Law of attraction seems to provided people and things to assist you when you are challenging yourself in getting what you want out of life.

A couple of final thoughts around getting focused and challenging yourself are:

1. Get a destination that you really desire so you know where you want to land up.

2. Never try to do something all at once, break it down into little steps, so that you are constantly successful and moving forward and challenging yourself.
