This week, Singtel, StarHub and M1 shares were succumb to some selling pressure as the 4th potential telco MyRepublic, airYotta and Australian telco TPG Telecom submitted their bids.

Another case written by Dr. Larry Haverkamp on The Sunday Times remind us again that no one cares about our money other than ourselves.  He wrote that Bloomberg News during its investigation found that Singapore banks actually received commissions for selling low-quality bonds that have defaulted.  These bonds are called 'unrated', and it is very hard to know their risks and investors are better off avoiding them.  However, our banks sold them anyway and kept quiet about the commissions they received.  Another good reminder that you should trust only yourself when it comes to investing.

What Causes for Stock Price Changes

August 26 2,857.65   -19.28  153 million shares traded         2.90                  2.97

The National rally speech by our Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong serve as a good reminder to investor.  Disruption 'bring opportunities for those that are quick to strike'.  It is the same in the stock market, many small investors see it as crises where smart investors see it as opportunities to invest in well-managed companies which have fallen below their book value.  He had given many examples on how changes had affect certain business sector and one of it was the rise of online shopping which had a great impact on the retail industry.  Although online shopping was bad for the retail industry, it had created more opportunities in the logistics sector as more vans are required to deliver the physical products.  In short, what he meant was that the business environment does not stay constant and when it close one opportunity, another new opportunity will be open.  As investor, we will have to think about what was mentioned in his speech and give some thoughts on which companies will benefits from the new consumers demand that had risen.

Investments Should Be Chose Wisely

August 12 2,867.40    -2.42  203 million shares traded         2.89                  2.95

Not much change on the STI as Singapore investors are keeping themselves busy on the updates of Rio 2016 Olympic.

Today Straits Times Business news titled, 'Mis-selling case: HK court rules against OCBC unit' caught my attention.  It is about their unit and a relationship manager who had breached their contractual duty towards an elderly couple who lost money on investment made with ING Asia Private Bank.  The news again remind us of the old true that 'Nobody cares about our money than ourselves'.

Swiber (BGK) winding up caught many investors by surprise and there are worries that there may be more such fallout.

Unfortunately, Swiber was one of DBS customer and they can only recover roughly half of their exposure of 700 m SGD from Swiber liquidation.  Due to this bad debts, DBS end the week at 15.41 down by -0.47 cents.

The low oil prices had bring down the share price of large companies like Keppel Corporation and Sembawang Corporation.   Swiber downfall had drag down DBS stock price and the event again shows the importance of diversification in different businesses.  The critics of diversification is that it lower your profits when stock are moving up.  During a bear market, all prices of stock in every businesses will falls and diversification will not help.

However, I still think diversification and investing in dividends stock as importance as it helps to lower down the impacts as we wait for the market to recover.

As an investor, you have to decide your own investment method and rules as there are always weakness and strength no matter which strategy you chose to follow.

Dividend Paying Stocks have lower downside risk

July 22 2,945.35    +4.87       196 million shares traded         2.97                   2.99

The STI end the week with slight change as expected since it is near the resistance line of 3,000.

Singtel end the week @ 4.30.  70% of its net profit are from overseas and they are activity investing into digital business such as its US cyber-security service provider Trustwave acquired in April last year.

Temasek has also announce this week that they will privatize SMRT at the price of 1.68.  I bought it years ago at 1.98 so will lose money on this investment.  Will take it as a lesson learned and move on.

Recent Sell
SBS Transit  (S61) @ 2.55 - Bought years ago @ 2.00 and decided to sell it as the P/E ratio is now 39 time its earning.  It went up because of the good news that Temasek is privatizing SMRT.  Once a nice dividend stock to hold but last 5 years had been nothing but down.  Presently, dividend yield is a miserable 1.08%.  Public outcry of its service is at all time high and if they make too much profits, the public will also complaint.  All these negative news are sell sign.

Singapore shares continue its uptrend as investors are hoping that there will more global monetary policy that will simulate the economy.  Technically, the STI is now 75 points towards its resistant level of 3,000. If it break free from 3,000, it is likely to continue its uptrend for sometime.

What Is the Right Approach To Investing

July 08    2,847.04 -15.13    175 million shares traded         2.88                   2.91

Singapore shares ended the week with not much differences compare with last week.  Beside the news of the Brexit, Italy bank were found to be burdened with 360 billion Euro of bad loan which is equal to 1/5 of the country GDP.  It is worrying as Italy is the 4th largest economy inside Europe.  The shares in Italy’s biggest banks have fallen nearly 50% since April, a sell-off that has intensified since the Brexit vote. Presently, the biggest worry is the solvency of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world’s oldest bank.  Finally, don't forget that Greece is also breathing at its neck.  2016 seems like a fearful year for any investments.
