What Are MRP Type

The MRP type is a key that controls the MRP procedure to be used for planning a material.

The MRP type belongs to the plant-specific data (in other words, the MRP area data of a material).

The MRP type controls which planning parameters must or can be entered when maintaining the material master record.

You can customize the parameters of the MRP types delivered with SAP R/3 according to your own requirements. You can also add new MRP types.

In the standard SAP system, the following MRP types are commonly used:

VB => Manual reorder point planning
VM => Automatic reorder point planning
V1 => Automatic reorder point planning including external requirements
V2 => Automatic reorder point planning without external requirements
VV => Forecast-based planning

Notes:

V1 is usually for fast moving items where the system recommends the quantity to buy based on Min/Max stock level . The min is the reorder point.

ND are basically for non stock items, the system do not plan for the material. Usually for this type of materials, procurement is by supply process 4.

PD is lot for lot. You place order based on the quantity on demand buy the requisitioner.

V1 are basically  used for vendor managed items. The system do not register any plan but will help to give you overview of the value of materials within the vendor yard

NP is no planning. This is phase and happens when you do not have any need to recommend the system to plan for the material probably because the material is slow moving, obsolete and you still have some quantity in stock. You will need to change the MRP type to NP to enable the stock level come to Zero then you change it to ND.

R1 is time phased planning, usually applied to seasonal goods or for project materials.
