Writing Your Own Book Of Life

"A woman is like a teabag--only in hot water
do you realise how strong she is."

"One can never consent to creep when
one feels an impulse to soar."

Your own book of life is what you write everyday. Your own destiny in life is not decided for you. Even though the circumstances of your childhood were not ideal, it was not the deciding factor of who you would become. Ultimately you had made that choice. If your life has not been going your way, never fear, here are some tips on how to recreate your life.

The axiom that change itself is a process is not always true. We often do have the ability to initiate change that is meaningful and even life-changing right this very moment. Here are a few tips to get things going:

Shifting Mindset

From thinking that overcoming that obstacle is something only of the future, to a belief that this momentous the only moment that we truly control, and each decision we make can be either be in support of the change that we seek or against it.

Identify The Cause

What has been holding me back? I have found that we often long to lose the extra 10 pounds, stop the same pattern in the relationship, or stop an addictive behavior, all the while engaging in an unconscious cycle of self-sabotage. Almost as if as soon as one part of us makes a move toward health, another part comes in and knocks it down, determined to keep us stuck. Once we identify this pattern that we can be free from it.

Practicing Acceptance

When we want to change something, it can be easy to become judgmental and critical of that part of ourselves as a way of creating distance from it. For example, if I am trying to become a less angry person, and my anger begins to come up, I am likely to judge the anger as 'bad', repress it so that I don't have to think of myself as an angry person. But emotions do not disappear, and this anger will surface in the form of projection onto others or, turn inwards, it often becomes depression. When we practice acceptance, and not judging ourselves, we will also become more accepting of other people. This ultimately creates more peace within and in the world.

The Importance Education

One thing to remember when making the decision to change your life is that this isn't about starting from scratch. Use your prior education and experience as a starting point to continue to move forward. It only takes a little confidence in your abilities. Another point to remember is that schooling is not the only form of an education. Everything you learn on the job, from book, or just from life is valid. Consider all of those honorary doctorate degrees that Universities hand out every year. They go to people who have earn the title on the job.

And finally, the reminder, 'that which you seek is already inside of you'. I've found we will go to great lengths to search for answers outside of ourselves, but the greatest teacher is the teacher within.
