As a working mother at home, do not expect any paid vacation or days off.  If a work at home mother is not working, she will get no money. This is a problem if she is sick, has sick children or anything that that may affect the performance of her work.

While working at a job outside the house, the mother must follow a schedule. If she has to skip work, she is responsible to informing her superiors, often with a legitimate excuse, with documentation. When self-employed, the mother alone is responsible. This makes it very easy, to skip doing any work.

The biggest error for at home moms when working from home is attempting to work without a schedule, although the schedule should be somewhat flexible. For mothers, especially mothers with older children, scheduling tasks by the hour will work. For others, including mothers with babies, scheduling tasks at the time of the day, such as morning, afternoon and evening may be a better choice.

The best way for a home working mother to cope with the inevitable delays and changes in working hours is to plan to work after the children have gone to bed or during naptime.

Another challenge the home working mom faces are the seemingly constant interruptions. There are alternative ways to overcome this challenge. The method that works best depends on how old the children are and what other events are in the house. A mother with young children must seek the participation of her children at work. For example, a freelance writer could have her child type on the keyboard next to her while she is writing. Another option would be for her to write on paper, while her child is scribbling on a piece of paper nearby.

Inevitably, interruptions do happen. As such, the work at home mother should increase the allotted time for each work task by 25 percent. If the job takes 1 hour to complete, she should set aside 1 hour and 15 minutes. Any time left over can be used to prepare the workspace for the next project.

Jobs for at home moms can be a little daunting at times, especially when the mother adapts to focusing on her job when the housework needs to be done. Just remember that housework is unavoidable and will always need to be done. Involve the older kids to help clean the house so that mom can focus more on her work.

Many other kind of challenges will occur when both the job and the kids are mixed at home. Addressing these potential challenges head on and thinking outside the box are the only means to a smoothly home based job and house.
