Identify the reason to freelance

Be as honest with yourself as you can be. If you decide not to take this advice, you may find disappointment. Knowing why you would like to succeed at something is often times more crucial than knowing how you will actually pull it off. The 'why' of your work is what will inspire you to persist and succeed.

Decide the time you can allocate to your new biz

This step can be especially important because you probably need to keep earning while you are putting together your freelance business. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you can devote your full attention to freelancing. You may need a 'Plan B' to keep you afloat while you figure this all out.

Choose what you want to do

Now that you understand the 'why' and 'how much time' you are working with, you are equipped to decide 'what' it is that you want to do as a freelance.

You will want to do some research first of course, to ascertain what you're most suitable for.  Take a little time to figure out what it is that you want to do. This is important. Because you will never be prosperous at work you do not enjoy.

Take action immediately

Do not get carried away in your research to such an extent that you aren't taking action. You may stumble a few times before landing on the right freelance job for you. That's fine. You aren't wasting your time if you are learning valuable lessons with each endeavor.

Testing

Make every attempt to test your concepts before launching or presenting them. While it is okay to fail every now and then, you don't want to make a habit of it. Test an idea as much as you possibly can before committing to it.

Be persistent

Be confident in your ability to succeed, but don't think that everything you do will come easy. Study your options, teat your plan and then stick with it and be persistent until it pays off.

Keep the best and throw away the rest

Evaluate everything that you've done. Be honest with yourself. Hang on to the work that gets results and ditch the everything else.

Just remember, 'bite by bite' -'step by step.'
