What is Affiliate Marketing? If you have heard the term before, it is certainly something that piques the curiosity. And you hear all the time about people making a lot of money doing it. So, what's the deal?

Unfortunately this is a hugely popular industry and with that popularity comes a lot of information, Most of it is well meant advice, but much of it serves as more of a hindrance than help. If you are tired of working all day, only to find that you've actually finished the day and accomplished very little then the chances are that you need some direction with your business.

Like any types of businesses, the most important thing to do is get together an affilate plan of attack. This allows you to focus your energy where it is needed and keep you on track, not diving off on tangents that will inevitably ended up wasting your time.

Many internet businesses with digital information to market (ebooks, audio products and the like) find that the best way to market their product is through affiliate marketing. There is no warehousing, no inventory, no time clock to be concerned with, and it's cheap, and it's cheap (it's worth saying twice).

There are a handful of websites out there that facilitate this process. Here's how it works, the prospect signs up free as an affiliate on one of these websites and is provided a username. Usually the host site (the site providing the product) then provides the affiliate with a URL containing the affiliates websites username. Confused yet? It's actually easier than it looks, but read on.

The affiliate chooses from a selection of media available to him/her to market the product. These include blogging, article posting, publishing, even search engine optimization. The affiliate then proceeds to guide as much internet traffic as possible to the URL provided, which in turn generates sales based on that traffic. The affiliate receives a commission based on the sale. Some websites even provide a recurring commission, so the prospect is paid indefinitely. Sounds simple enough, right?

Well, yes and no. Those with experience will tell you that it is easy, and in most cases it is. You can earn a sizable income rivalling that of a full-time job if you play your cards right. Due dilligence is key. But if you have no experience marketing someone else's product, then do your homework. The business will provide for you as much as you care to put in. If you decide to treat it as a business, you will be richly rewarded with business results. But if you fall into the hype and the 'get rich' promises you'll end up disappointed and jaded. Unfortunately, most affiliates fall into the latter category. It pays not to be one of them!

If and when you decide to take up the challenge, just remember that persistence, due diligence, and confidence are virtues in this business. As in all things, exercise your research muscles and you will learn the business quickly and painlessly. Soon you'll find yourself excited every time you log in to your bank account and see increasing numbers
